GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids window cleaning company has been ordered to pay more than $29,000 in fines after a federal investigation found it had violated child labor laws and was responsible for a child being seriously injured.

According to the Department of Labor, Absolutely Clean Services Inc. employed three minors to clean residential windows and gutters and install Christmas lights, which included tasks that are considered off-limits for people under the age of 18.

In one instance, one of the minors suffered serious injuries and needed surgery after falling off of a roof.

Mary O’Rourke, the district director of the DOL’s Wage and House Division, said the incident never should have happened.

“A child was injured while working a dangerous job for which they never should have been hired,” O’Rourke said in a statement. “There is no excuse for violating the law and putting children at risk. Nearly 100 years ago, federal child labor laws were enacted to prevent employers from jeopardizing the safety and well-being of young workers.”

DOL investigators also discovered that two of the three minors were allowed to operate vehicles with a gross weight over 6,000 pounds, and the employee file for one of the minors did not include a date of birth.

“Employers have no business employing minors to work on roofs or drive cars on public roads,” DOL Regional Solicitor Christine Heri stated. “Every company employing minors has the paramount responsibility to make sure they are kept safe, and — as this case demonstrates — the department will use every legal resource available to protect them.”

Absolutely Clean Services Inc. is required to pay $29,210 in fines. The payments have been split in half. The company has already filed the first payment. The rest must be paid by Jan. 6, 2025.
