Thanksgiving Day: Mostly cloudy and cool with a chance of snow late

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Happy Thanksgiving! West Michigan is in for a fairly quiet day before lake-effect snow slides in during the evening.

After kicking off the day with lows near freezing, a quiet afternoon settles in. A few flurries may be present during the afternoon. Most will stay dry throughout the daytime hours.

As the day continues, we’ll see peeks of sun, but mostly cloudy skies overall and temperatures climbing near 40 degrees. Temperatures are anticipated to be slightly cooler than average — the typical high temperature for Nov. 28 stands at 42 degrees.

The wind should be held under control as that flows in from the northwest between 5 and 15 mph.

As we move through the afternoon on Thanksgiving Day, it’s likely that scattered lake effect snow showers will form. These are anticipated to become more intense with greater coverage as we move past sunset.

Accumulations by midnight on Thanksgiving leading into Black Friday may range between 0.5″ and 1.0″ of snowfall while also starting to create slippery stretches. By the end of the day Friday, most of West Michigan will see around 1 to 3″ of snow. Some locally higher totals west of US-131 look likely depending on where heavy bands set up.
