School closing prediction for Tuesday, Dec. 3

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — With some lakeshore communities seeing 6 to 12 inches of snow and more on the way overnight, a few closings will be possible Tuesday.

Snow was a bit slow to get going Monday, which caused schools to remain open. However, as the day progressed and the snow arrived, road conditions deteriorated in spots, especially along the lakeshore. The winter storm warning has been extended for Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties until 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

A quick-hitting burst of snow is expected to drop from north to south overnight through the lakeshore counties and could quickly put down 1 to 3 inches or more. In the areas that have already received heavy snow Monday, that will amplify the chance for a few school closings on Tuesday.

PREDICTION: Ottawa & Kent counties

Parts of Grand Haven and Port Sheldon township saw 7 to 12 inches of snow or more Monday. A few additional inches are possible overnight. While closings aren’t necessarily expected here, there is a nonzero chance. A low (2/5) chance is in place for Grand Haven, West Ottawa, Holland and Hamilton.

PREDICTION: Southern area

The best chance for any school closings Tuesday will be in western Allegan and Van Buren counties, where heavy snowfall has been taking place through the afternoon. Additional snowfall is likely here, especially in Van Buren County, and with the secondary batch dropping through overnight it may be enough to close a few districts. For now, there’s a moderate (3/5) chance for Saugatuck, Fennville, Glenn, South Haven, Bloomingdale, Bangor, Covert, Hartford and Lawrence.

PREDICTION: Northern area

With the aforementioned area of snow dropping south overnight, a few inches will be possible along the lakeshore north of Muskegon. Thus, there is a very low (1/5) chance of closings here.

LOOKING AHEAD

Wind and lake-effect snow still looks likely Wednesday night into Thursday over a wide area, which will provide the next meaningful chance for school closings.
