GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — You may be wondering where our Daybreak meteorologist of 26 years has gone, but fear not, he did not leave for whiter slopes.

Matt Kirkwood has been recovering from a planned surgery and is hoping to be back to work in mid-December.

Matt and his family are avid snow lovers. He said his passion for skiing and snowmobiling motivates him to stay in peak shape (as well as the desire to keep up with his now high school graduate kids).

Matt said the surgery was on his hip and went well. He is healing well and hopes to return to work before the end of the year, and the slopes before the end of the season.

For now, he is enjoying being home and resting, though he admits he has been looking at weather data in anticipation of the big arctic blast headed our way in early December.
