GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The final weekend of the high school football season has arrived, with three area teams vying for state titles in their respective divisions.

All games will be played at Ford Field in Detroit Friday and Saturday.

DIVISION 1

HUDSONVILLE EAGLES (12-1) vs. DETROIT CASS TECH TECHNICIANS (11-2)

Saturday at 7 p.m.

Hudsonville will play for a state title for the first time since 2005 after a big second half carried the Eagles to a 27-7 win over Rochester Adams in a Division 1 semifinal.

The Eagles scored 20 unanswered points in the final two quarters after being tied at halftime.

Hudsonville will bring a 12-game winning streak to Ford Field. Its only loss was to Howell in the season opener, but it went on to beat Howell in the regional finals.

The Eagles are looking for their first state championship after losing to Birmingham Brother Rice in the finals in 2005 and 2000.

Cass Tech, which is just 1 mile from Ford Field, is back in the finals for the first time since going a perfect 14-0 and winning a state crown in 2016. The Technicians upset previously unbeaten Detroit Catholic Central 17-14 in their semifinal. Cass Tech lost to Rockford in its season opener and also lost to Division 3 state finalist Detroit Martin Luther King.

DIVISION 2

BYRON CENTER BULLDOGS (12-1) vs. ORCHARD LAKE ST. MARYS EAGLETS (10-3)

Friday at 7 p.m.

Byron Center will make its first appearance at Ford Field and compete for the program’s first state title after a stellar defensive performance in the semifinals.

The Bulldogs held East Lansing to a pair of touchdowns in a 41-14 win and avenged last year’s loss in the regional finals.

Senior quarterback Landon Tungate had six touchdowns for the victors, who have already set a new school record for wins and points (518) in a season.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s is back in the finals for the first time since 2016, when it edged Muskegon 29-28 to win a Division 3 state title.

The Eaglets had back-to-back losing seasons before this year’s tournament run, which included a 28-27 overtime win over previously unbeaten Birmingham Groves in the semifinals.

DIVISION 3

ZEELAND WEST DUX (12-1) vs. DETROIT MARTIN LUTHER KING CRUSADERS (10-3)

Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Zeeland West pulled off perhaps the biggest upset of semifinal weekend with an impressive 32-20 win over DeWitt, which was unbeaten and one of the highest scoring teams in MHSAA history.

The Dux defense held DeWitt to 37 points below its season average and will head to Ford Field for the first time since 2015.

Zeeland West went unbeaten in 2015, winning a Division 4 state title. It was the end of a stretch of three state championships in five years.

MLK returns to Ford Field for the seventh time in the last nine years after beating Mason 35-14.

The Crusaders won back-to-back state titles in 2021 and 2022, beating DeWitt and Muskegon, respectively.

MLK lost back-to-back games to Cass Tech and Detroit Catholic Central to end the regular season.
