GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — One week after suffering an ugly leg injury, Detroit Lions star Aidan Hutchinson said he is “doing great” as the healing process has begun.
Hutchinson posted a video to social media after the team’s 31-29 come-from-behind win over Minnesota on Sunday.
“We are one week out from surgery. The first days were a little rough but now we are on the road to recovery and just attacking each day. I want to thank all of the kids who made me the videos. I want to thank all of my teammates, all of the fans, all of the support all over social media. It has been amazing and I’m doing great, just pushing through,” Hutchinson said.
He continued: “Got to see the Lions win today. It’s a big win. So happy for them. We’re going to keep pushing and just keep taking this thing day by day.”
Hutchinson was hurt in the third quarter of last week’s 47-9 win over Dallas. While sacking Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, his left leg whipped out, hitting teammate Alim McNeill’s leg. Hutchinson’s leg wrapped around it, breaking his fibula and tibia.
The game was stopped for about 10 minutes while medical crews secured his leg with an air cast and brought out a cart to take him off of the field. Hutchinson was taken to a nearby hospital and underwent surgery to repair the leg.
The star edge rusher was put on injured reserve, and team officials have indicated the recovery table is somewhere between four and six months. Multiple sources have reported murmurs from inside the team that say Hutchinson may have a chance to return late in the playoffs — if the Lions can make a deep postseason run.
Super Bowl LIX is on Feb. 9 — approximately four months following the day of his surgery (Oct. 13).
Hutchinson was on a tear prior to the injury. After five games — including the Dallas game where he left early — he led the league with 7.5 sacks. He also had 19 tackles and a forced fumble.
