South Haven mayor condemns hate after racist flyers, display

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — The mayor of South Haven said police are investigating two racist incidents in the South Haven area.

“A suspect who is not from our community has been identified in the first incident,” wrote South Haven Mayor Annie Brown in an open letter Wednesday.

Friday night, officers received reports of antisemitic flyers being thrown out of a car window for several miles between 18th Avenue and Northshore Drive in South Haven. After witnesses gave a description of the man’s car, he was cited for littering and obstructing a license plate with mud, police said.

Brown said the investigation has been turned over to the prosecutor, who is considering charges.

A second incident involved “an anti-Black display in a neighboring township,” wrote Brown, adding that investigation is also ongoing.

She denounced both incidents, calling them “unacceptable” and gave her support to law enforcement to prosecute the suspects “to the full extent of the law.”

“Let us be very clear: Hate has no place in South Haven. Hate will not be tolerated here,” Brown wrote.
