GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Months after its previous undersheriff was removed from the job, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office has promoted someone to fill the role.

New Undersheriff Casey Davis has been with the sheriff’s department for 16 years, a Monday release said.

He came aboard in April 2008 as a road patrol deputy, moved to the narcotics division in February 2011 and worked as an undercover detective, then returned to road patrol as a sergeant in January 2017. He became a lieutenant in February 2019 and was assigned to oversee the narcotics division and SWAT team.

In May 2017, the sheriff’s office said, Davis started first aid when an off-duty Grand Rapids police officer suffered a heart attack and stopped breathing. The officer was revived before paramedics arrived. The sheriff’s office said Davis also caught two thieves in the act after they broke into a convenience store in 2010. He received awards for both instances.

The sheriff’s department aid former Undersheriff Kevin Conklin was removed from the department “following an investigation concerning Brady/Giglio matters.”

So-called “Giglio” issues have to do with character and truthfulness of an officer. An officer who has been caught lying loses credibility and may not be able to testify at court.

Conklin was placed on administrative leave in July and, after the sheriff’s office consulted with the prosecutor’s office, removed.
