FLORENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office says a man was taken into custody Tuesday after allegedly trying to steal a vehicle and then running away from deputies.

Deputies were sent to the 62000 block of Wahl Road, near Klinger Lake Road, in Florence Township for a person who was reportedly trying to steal a homeowner’s vehicle out of their driveway.

They found the vehicle, and the person — described by police as a 43-year-old man from Centreville — took off, according to a release from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office.

“This resulted in a short pursuit when the driver fled the vehicle on foot,” the release says.

After a brief chase, deputies say they took the man into custody. He was taken to the emergency room for a mental evaluation, according to the release.

The sheriff’s office says it intends to seek charges for unlawful driving away of an automobile, fleeing and eluding police and resisting and obstructing police.
