FLORENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say two people were killed in a head-on crash in St. Joseph County.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened around 9:30 a.m. Sunday on Sevison Road near the intersection of Mintdale Road in Florence Township, near the Indiana border.

A Mercedes was heading northbound on Sevison when the driver lost control, crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a southbound pickup truck, according to the sheriff’s office.

The driver and passenger of the pickup truck were pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. They were identified as a 60-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man, both from Constantine.

The Mercedes driver, a 22-year-old White Pigeon man, was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, according to the sheriff’s office.

Before the crash, the sheriff’s office said deputies tried to pull the Mercedes over on US-131 for speeding. However, the driver did not stop. There was a short chase, but deputies lost sight of the car. Deputies found the crash scene after a passerby told deputies they saw the fleeing Mercedes on Sevison.

The sheriff’s office said the Mercedes driver had a suspended license, and speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash. All those involved were wearing their seatbelts, the sheriff’s office noted.
