GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Bell’s Brewery’s parent company is selling its Upper Peninsula sister brewery.
Upper Hand Brewery in Escanaba is set to be sold to Seven Beverages, New Belgium Brewing said in a statement to News 8. The company announced the decision to employees on Nov. 19.
“Thank you to the Upper Hand team for their years of hard work, creativity, and innovation,” New Belgium CEO Shaun Belongie said in the statement. “The ownership, pride, and dedication to brewing exceptional craft beers have resonated within the local community and are a testament to their dedication and talent. We’re excited to see the new owners continue the legacy of incredible craft beer in Northern Michigan.”
Bell’s Brewery founder Larry Bell started Upper Hand 10 years ago. In 2021, it started distributing its beers in the Lower Peninsula. Its brews include the Upper Hand IPA, the Upper Peninsula Ale and Laughing Fish.
New Belgium will continue operating the brewery and its tap room until Seven Beverages, a company based in California, is able to secure a Michigan alcohol license. The company expects it will hand over operations early next year.
Bell’s Brewing was sold and merged with New Belgium Brewing in 2021 so that its founder could retire.
