GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has filed a lawsuit against a Massachusetts man for allegedly operating fraudulent websites posing as organizations that raised money for political campaigns.

Donald Peltier, of South Hadley, Massachusetts, is the target of the lawsuit, according to a press release from Nessel’s office.

Peltier is accused of setting up and soliciting donations on several different websites, posting as both Democrats and Republicans.

Nessel accused Peltier of preying on people’s enthusiasm for the upcoming election.

“Donating to a cause or candidate you believe in can be gratifying, but it’s important to be vigilant against scams,” Nessel stated. “Bad actors often prey on this enthusiasm, using deceptive tactics like fraudulent websites to steal your hard-earned money.”

Nessel’s office provided a list of tips for donors to ensure their money is going to a legitimate organization. The office encourages donors to proactively seek out campaigns instead of relying on unsolicited fundraisers and to cross-reference information.

Any Michigan residents who believe they may have been solicited or have donated to a fake political action committee can file a complaint with the FBI, the Federal Election Commission and the AG’s Consumer Protection Team.
