GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An 18-year-old from northern Michigan faces several criminal charges including attempted murder for allegedly burning down the home of his ex’s family.
According to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was reported at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24. Four people were inside the home at the time but were able to make it out safely.
According to investigators, a child inside the home woke up a couple of hours before the fire broke out, telling the adults that he had heard strange noises. After looking around and not finding anything, they went back to bed.
“A couple hours later the same juvenile woke up everyone in the home stating the house was on fire,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “While getting out of the burning home, a suspect was seen running away from the home.”
After talking to deputies with the Antrim County Sheriff’s Office, a former boyfriend of one of the home’s occupants was taken in for questioning. That suspect, 18-year-old Cameron Spencer, was eventually arrested.
Spencer was arraigned Tuesday on eight felony counts: four counts of attempted murder, one count of second-degree arson, one count of first-degree home invasion and two counts of malicious destruction of property.
The home is considered a total loss.
