GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An inmate is back in police custody after briefly escaping from a Michigan courthouse.
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened at 2:22 p.m. Wednesday in Ludington. A 26-year-old man was being escorted from a patrol car to a courthouse when he managed to flee on foot from a deputy.
The inmate, still in “handcuffs and belly chains,” took off heading south and east. Officers from several local agencies responded to set up a perimeter, including the Ludington Police Department, the Scottville Police Department, Michigan State Police and more Mason County deputies.
The sheriff’s office launched its drone for an aerial search and multiple K-9s were brought in to try and track the man.
The sheriff’s office says the inmate was found at 2:46 p.m. hiding behind a garage a few blocks away and taken into custody.
“Thanks to our partners in law enforcement that were there quickly and helped in maintaining a perimeter and searched for the suspect,” Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole said in a statement.
The inmate was set to appear in court regarding breaking and entering charges.
