GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The winter weather blowing into Michigan over the last week is having an impact on blood supply in the state.

Versiti Blood Center of Michigan is experiencing a “critical shortage of blood and platelet donations,” it said in a release Thursday.

During recent snowstorms over the past few days, hundreds of people canceled their blood donation appointments. Versiti expects that to continue through the end of the week. It’s urging people to consider donating once the weather improves to keep up with the blood needed for local hospitals.

“As the demand for blood donations rises, Versiti Blood Center is urgently seeking O-negative and O-positive blood donors. These universal blood types can be transfused to all patients, including trauma victims, cancer patients, and those undergoing surgery,” the blood center wrote in a release.

Platelets, which are used for cancer patients, trauma survivors and premature babies, only last for five to seven days outside the body, which means the need for platelets is constant.

Anyone 17 or older who is in good health and meets eligibility requirements should visit their local donation center. Appointments are encouraged and walk-ins are welcome. Here is a list of Versiti locations in West Michigan:
