GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — TGI Fridays at RiverTown Crossings has closed.

A sign on the restaurant’s door Tuesday said it has closed permanently “due to unforeseen circumstances.” The location closed for good on Monday, RiverTown Crossings General Manager Ed Mchale said in a statement to News 8.

“The decision to close was the operator’s choice. As we look ahead to the changes coming to RiverTown Crossings, we look forward to bringing new and enhanced offerings to our guests,” Mchale said in the statement.

The move came after TGI Friday’s filed for bankruptcy protection in early November. Citing court documents, WJET, WOOD TV8’s sister station in Erie, Pennsylvania, reports it has between $100 million and $500 million in assets and owes its creditors a similar amount.

“The next steps announced … are difficult but necessary actions to protect the best interests of our stakeholders, including our domestic and international franchisees and our valued team members around the world,” Rohit Manocha, executive chairman of TGI Fridays Inc., said in a Nov. 2 release. “The primary driver of our financial challenges resulted from COVID-19 and our capital structure. This restructuring will allow our go-forward restaurants to proceed with an optimized corporate infrastructure that enables them to reach their full potential.”

The company said the proceedings would not impact independently owned franchise locations. It is unclear if the RiverTown location was a franchise location or owned by the company, or if the closure was due to the filing.

TGI Fridays has closed around 50 locations this year, Restaurant Business reports.

There are now three locations in Michigan: The one at 3179 Alpine Ave. near I-96 in Walker, along with locations in Saginaw and Southfield.

News 8 reached out to TGI Fridays and did not hear back by end of day Tuesday.
