GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — All Taco John’s Michigan locations have closed.
Franchise owner Meritage Hospitality Group has closed all five of its Michigan locations, including the Taco John’s in Wyoming, Hudsonville and Caledonia. Those three locations all opened in February of last year.
“We did make the difficult decision to close our Taco John’s restaurants. We appreciate our employees’ commitment and hard work as well as the community’s patronage as we have endeavored to make this concept a success,” a Meritage spokesperson said in a statement to News 8.
Meritage said the last day of business for its Taco John’s locations was Sept. 12.

The company plans on reopening the properties as a “different concept,” Meritage said.
“(We) look forward to once again serving the community in days to come,” the statement says.
Meritage did not provide details on what concept is set to take its place. A sign on the former Taco John’s location in Wyoming, located at 1730 28th St. SW near Burlingame Avenue, said the store is closed for rebranding.

Meritage had planned on building 50 Taco John’s restaurants by 2026, with the possibility of building 150 more. It was the “biggest franchise deal in Taco John’s history,” Taco John’s said at the time.
“The Company has people and resources in position to scale Taco John’s across multiple states,” Meritage CEO Robert Schermer Jr. previously said in a 2022 release on the plan.

There are no Taco John’s locations left in Michigan, according to the Taco John’s website. The closest is now located in Michigan City, Indiana.
Based in Grand Rapids, Meritage’s other restaurants include several Wendy’s locations, along with Morning Belle and Stan’s Tacos. Its prior brands include the Twisted Rooster.
It currently has more than 380 restaurants in more than 16 states, according to its website.
