GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kent City man who tested positive for HIV has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a girl on numerous occasions over several years.
The girl earlier testified that Christopher Michael Haggerty, 31, told her she would “go to hell” if she disclosed the sexual assaults.
A Kent County jury on Wednesday found Haggerty guilty of multiple crimes, including first-degree criminal sexual conduct and HIV-knowingly engaging in intercourse with an uninformed partner.
He faces up to life in prison when he returns for sentencing in January. Haggerty remains held in the Kent County jail without bond. Two separate criminal cases are pending.
Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker said the details of the case were disturbing. He praised Elizabeth Bartlett, assistant prosecutor, for her work.
“You never know what will happen when a child is forced to take the stand in front of a jury of adults, so very happy with this verdict and being able to hold this man accountable for the horrific things he has done,’’ Becker said.
The trial got underway Monday in Kent County Circuit Court.
According to court records, the victim last fall told investigators she was sexually assaulted by Haggerty when she was 5 or 6 years old. The assaults, the girl said, happened at multiple locations.
Haggerty was arrested in early January.
Court records indicated that a second victim, a boy, was confirmed to have HIV. Both victims were known to Haggerty, investigators said.
“Any sexual offense involving a child is egregious,” Becker said.
