PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The LMCU Ballpark was alight with holiday cheer Saturday as it kicked of its huge annual holiday lights show, after its opening was delayed due to vandalism that damaged hundreds of lights.

Tuesday evening, the day before the Christmas Lite Show was supposed to kick off, some of the display’s wires were cut. Hundreds of lights were damaged, the Kent County Sheriff’s office says. It says a man was caught on video walking up to the south side of the ballpark around 9 p.m. that day.

Christmas Lite Show founder Bill Schrader, 95, says about a quarter of the displays were not working due to the vandalism.

After a few days of cleanup and determination, the show was up and running Saturday, officially kicking off its 27th season at 5:30 p.m.

“It grows each year, and our team keeps growing,” Schrader told News 8. “I just can’t say enough about the people that’s helped me put this together, it’s just amazing. And they’re still out here, in their trailers now repairing stuff.”

The Christmas Lite Show is open now through Jan. 4, with tickets available from 5:30 p.m. through 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 5:30 p.m. through 10 p.m. Friday through Saturday.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 616.632.6125 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.

American Legion Post 179 in Walker says it is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible. Schrader, a U.S. Army veteran, has been a member of the post for about three decades and previously served as its commander.
