KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Kalamazoo police officers shot and killed a man after they say he pulled a gun when they approached him Tuesday.

The man was taken to the hospital, where police said he was later pronounced dead.

No officers were injured, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief David Boysen said.

Boysen said police initially got a report of a person who was believed to be armed threatening to harm someone. They found him around 12:30 p.m. in the driver’s seat of a car parked on the north side of Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park on N Rose Street near W Harkins Court.

“He produced a gun when my officers contacted him,” Boysen said. “A handgun, that’s all I know.”

Two officers opened fire, Boysen said.

The passenger in the car was uninjured. That person was not involved in the earlier threat complaint, the chief said.

Boysen did not release the name of the man who was shot but said he also had warrants out for his arrest.

“It’s a super high risk situation. Obviously you have an individual armed making threats and luckily no one was else struck,” Boysen said.

People who were at MLK Park as the shooting unfolded said they heard multiple rounds being fired.

“They just start shooting: pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,” recalled witness Shamika Jones.

Jones said she was concerned that a shooting took place near a park where other people were nearby.

“A bullet could’ve hit any bystanders. I have three stents in my heart, I’ve already had a heart attack. So I’m like, ‘Y’all almost gave me a heart attack.’ And my niece is so shook up, she won’t even talk to anybody about it,” Jones said.

Michigan State Police have been called in to investigate the shooting and the officers involved have been placed on paid leave, all of which is standard protocol. The KDPS Office of Professional Standards is also conducting a review.

Boysen asked anyone who saw what happened to call KDPS at 269.488.8911 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.

The Kalamazoo Metro bus service warned riders there may be service interruptions due to the investigation near MLK Park.
