KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety announced its new Gun Amnesty Program in an effort to reduce gun-related violence.

The program gives residents a secure and anonymous way to get rid of unwanted firearms, regardless of their type, make, model, caliber or condition, according to KDPS.

First, wrap or bag your unwanted firearm to ensure a safe handoff. Then, call one of the participating locations to schedule an appointment to drop off the firearm.

During your appointment, you will place the firearm inside the provided case and a staff member will secure it with a lock. Then a KDPS officer will come to pick up the secured box for documentation and a safe disposal.

“Many times that people come, they don’t know what to do with guns, they might find them in their homes they might find them somewhere and think that they can’t turn them in or they will get in trouble if someone turns them in. But this program is a program that would help relieve those anxieties and help them to be able to turn those guns in,” Pastor Gregory Jennings with Progressive Deliverance Ministries church told News 8.

There are six drop-off sites:
