OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a teenager was shot and killed near Kalamazoo Tuesday night.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received multiple reports of a shooting at Concord Place Apartments on KL Avenue between Drake Road and 11th Street in Oshtemo Township shortly before midnight.
When deputies arrived, the sheriff’s office said they found a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released.
News 8 was not able to contact the teen’s family Wednesday, but posts on social media reflected their shock.
Several renters who live in the complex confirmed to News 8 that they heard between four and six gunshots and men shouting around 11:45 p.m. One person who asked not to be named shared video of what happened immediately following the shooting. That person said the 15-year-old was lying on a patch of grass, suffering from at least one gunshot wound, when deputies arrived minutes later. The witness added they saw two men run through the hallway of one of the complex’s buildings before fleeing the scene.
“I heard five or six gunshots, rapid succession,” said Daniel Mitton, another renter who lives in the complex. “I grabbed the dog and ran to the bathroom. Police, ambulance showed up shortly after, taped off the parking lot back there, tapped off this road here and had this entrance blocked off.”
Deputies have not said what led up to the shooting or if any arrests have been made. No suspect information was released. The sheriff’s office said the sheriff and undersheriff were off Wednesday and that more details may be available later in the week.
