GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids is offering four early in-person voting sites ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election.

By law, early in-person voting in Michigan must run for at least nine consecutive days before an election, wrapping up on the Sunday before Election Day. This means that ahead of the Nov. 5 election, most communities will kick off early voting on Saturday, Oct. 26. The last day to vote early will be Sunday, Nov. 3.

In Kent County, each jurisdiction operates its own early voting sites. So if you want to vote early, you’ll have to visit a location in the jurisdiction where you’re registered to vote.

Grand Rapids voters will have four options:

All four sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

Other counties may handle early voting differently. For instance, Ottawa County operates several early voting centers across the county and any Ottawa County voter can use any of the centers.

No matter where you live in Michigan, you can visit michigan.gov/vote to find your early voting sites.

Early in-person voting is a relatively new option in Michigan — this is the first year it has been mandated statewide — and county clerks say that turnout has been low so far.

“Of the people who participated in the August (2024) election, only 3% of them utilized early voting as their method,”  Kent County Clerk Lisa Posthumus Lyons previously told News 8.

But she expects the numbers to rise with time.

“I can only imagine that as time goes on, as this becomes more of a regular part of our election process, you’re going to start seeing many more voters utilize the method,” she said.
