GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A landmark restaurant and bar in downtown Grand Rapids is available for lease, the listing agent confirms to News 8.
The Cottage Bar, located at 18 LaGrave Ave. near Fulton Street, has been listed for lease through Advantage Property.
The move follows a temporary closure earlier this year. In May, Cottage Bar shut its doors amid a dispute between the owners and staff. Employees told News 8 they were fired, while owner Jassi Dhami said staff would not return to work. Either way, the restaurant reopened in June with a new front-of-house staff.

Now, it’s closed again. Dhami, who could not be reached Thursday for a full interview, previously told News 8 over the phone that it will reopen, though the property’s listing agent said that could be as a new concept.
The listing agent said there have been multiple tours at the property, which he described as “unique as unique can be,” but there are no offers yet.
The Cottage Bar has a long history, dating back to when it first opened in 1927. It bills itself as the city’s longest-running bar.

It claims the title as the first restaurant to get a liquor license in Grand Rapids after the end of Prohibition. Over the years, it hosted events like an annual chili cook-off, a 36-year tradition that ended in 2018 but has since gotten new life through the Fans of Valley Field organization.
In 1996, then-owner Dan Verhil opened One Trick Pony next door.

Verhil had taken over the Cottage Bar from his father, John Verhil. He ran it for 40 years until 2020, when he made the decision to sell it and One Trick Pony and retire.
“It was a bittersweet decision,” Verhil told News 8 at the time. “One I’ve been contemplating for the last couple of years.”
He sold it to Jassi and Sandeep Dhami, who also own Palace of India next door to the One Trick Pony. The One Trick Pony building has been empty for a few years and is also available for lease.
