GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Patients at Helen DeVos are ready for Halloween.

The tiniest patients at Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital NICU have been dressed up in Halloween costumes, like triplets Wilder, Milo and Cyrus, fraternal triplets dressed up as some of the foods that their mom ate while pregnant.

One infant, Jaheem, was dressed up as Superman.

“He’s so strong,” his mom said in a release from Corewell Health.

Other costumes included an M&M, a mermaid and a trio of pink sleepy turtles.

As the community gets ready for trick-or-treating Thursday, the hospital had some tips on staying safe.

It’s important to use flashlights or wear reflective material in order to be seen, the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital injury prevention team shared, and costumes shouldn’t be too long — this helps prevent tripping. Families should also be careful about the use of masks.

Trick-or-treaters should cross at street corners and crosswalks and be aware of slippery surfaces, like wet fallen leaves. Meanwhile, drivers need to slow down and use headlights.

Don’t eat any candy that’s already been opened or anything homemade from someone you don’t know, and stick with age-appropriate candy.

Finally, the injury prevention team says kids should have an adult’s phone number memorized or have it on them in case they get separated.

There are several Halloween events taking place across West Michigan this week, including trunk-or-treat events. Click here for a list.
