GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The tiniest patients at a Grand Rapids hospital are ready to celebrate Halloween with their costumes.

Nurses at the Trinity Health Grand Rapids Neonatal Intensive Care Unit hand-made costumes for their NICU patients, Trinity Health said Monday. The costumes were made to be put on without disrupting the babies’ care, the hospital said.

“Though the babies are not able to go outside to trick-or-treat, dressing up in the costumes allowed families to experience a childhood milestone,” Trinity Health said in a release.

The costumes were everything from Rapunzel and a scuba diver to a lion and a bank robber.

The 15-bed NICU unit cares for 200 to 300 newborns each year, the hospital says, with some born as early as 22 weeks.

Halloween lands on a Thursday this year. There are several events throughout West Michigan to celebrate.
