GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — During this season of giving, one organization is looking to help those battling cancer.

Bluebird Cancer Retreats of West Michigan provides retreat experiences to cancer patients, as well as survivors and caregivers. The organization is hoping to generate funds to help those in need this holiday season with its Holiday Happiness Project. The project includes several major cancer centers in the area.

Bluebird also has teamed up with Gracious Grounds to help fill gift baskets. Gracious Grounds is a nonprofit that offers housing and support to those living with disabilities.

The hope is to help cover those in need especially around the holidays when the cost for treatments could already be affecting them.

“Finances are an issue when you go through cancer. Suddenly you’ve got co-pays, your bills, sometimes you have to quit your job. And people are making choices that are sometimes even hard to imagine: They’re deciding whether they fill their gas tanks or maybe put a meal on the table for a holiday. So we want to take the edge off this time of year,” Renee Denslow, the executive director of Bluebird, said.
