GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A day of recognition and celebration for our nation’s heroes took place in downtown Grand Rapids Monday night during the annual Veterans Day parade that some make sure they attend every year.
“We try to come every year. Our veterans sacrifice so much for us, their families sacrifice so much for us, they go away willing to die for us, this is the least we can do. It’s one day a year,” said paradegoer Marie Morgan.
The Morgan family was bundled up in blankets.
“It’s a little cold, but if they can do it, so can we,” Morgan said.
“It’s the least I can do,” said paradegoer Bob Sepanik.
Sepanik carried the American flag as he watched. He’s there for all the veterans, including his dad.
“I think of him when I come down here, and a lot of my other friends that have served. And some of them paid the ultimate. So I just want to be here,” Sepanik said.
“We can’t do enough for them, there’s so many that are suffering,” Sepanik added. “’Cause it lasts a lifetime. They may have only served for four years but it may be the rest of their life that they’re actually serving.”
Attendees hope their thanks makes a difference.
“Thank you. We appreciate you and we’re just blessed that you were willing to make that sacrifice,” Morgan said.
