GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man has been charged after windows were smashed at The Candied Yam in Grand Rapids, court documents say.
According to the felony complaint, Darda Brooks, 32, of Grand Rapids has been charged with malicious destruction of building — $1,000 or more but less than $20,000.
The vandalism happened Saturday at the Grand Rapids restaurant, located on S. Division Avenue near Delaware Street SE.
The Candied Yam said two doors and six windows were broken.
“Immediately, I was angry. Immediately, I was very angry,” owner Jessica Ann Tyson told News 8 Saturday. “I felt, why? Why? They walked me to the back and I was just speechless….Shattered glass everywhere, our precious plants just destroyed — it just hurt my heart.”
According to a probable cause affidavit, “a witness who lived across the street … observed a male, later identified as Darda Brooks, smashing multiple windows on the restaurant, Candied Yam.”
“Officers arrived to find numerous windows shattered around the building,” the affidavit continues.
The document says Brooks was found walking in the area and was detained. It says surveillance footage showed him throwing a brick through the windows.
“(Brooks) was interviewed and admitted to the crime,” the affidavit says.
Brooks’ next court hearing is scheduled for October.
