GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A record number of runners took to the street of downtown Grand Rapids Thursday for the 32nd annual Grand Rapids Public Schools Turkey Trot.

There were 6,435 racers this time around, up from 5,834 a year ago for the holiday 5K run and walk. Zachary Ripley of Rockford was the top male finisher with a time of 14:32 and Alyssa McElheny from Belding was the top female runner with a time of 16:35.

Organizers also announced that the race reached its $100,000 fundraising goal for GRPS Athletics well before Thursday. More than $300,000 was raised this year to help all kids in the school district play the sports they want to without having to worry about the cost.

“Whenever you can reduce any restrictions or things that give the way of allowing our scholar athletes to participate, it’s always an advantage,” Jolinda Lucas, a volunteer coordinator, said. “We know being an athlete allows students to excel not only in the classroom but outside the classroom.”
