Violent felon arrested after standoff in Emmett Twp

EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A violent felon from Emmett Township was arrested on Friday after he fled from a traffic stop and barricaded himself in a home, deputies say.

Around 5:40 p.m., a deputy with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office pulled a vehicle on Beckley Road near Whitmark Drive in Battle Creek for several traffic violations. The deputy recognized the driver from prior contact as a 34-year-old Emmett Township man who is a known violent offender with felony warrants out for his arrest.

While the deputy was speaking to him, the man took off eastbound on Beckley Road, the sheriff’s office said. A chase followed. It ended when the man crashed his vehicle in the area of Beadle Lake Road near Trappers Ridge in Emmett Township. The man then took off into the wooded area.

A police dog tracked the man to a house in the area. The sheriff’s office said that a perimeter was set up. Deputies searched the home and found the man barricaded in a room. He told them that he had a gun and threatened to harm deputies if they tried to arrest him.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team and Negotiators were sent to the scene. They negotiated with the man for about four hours before he exited the home and was taken into custody.

The 34-year-old man was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and numerous firearm violations. His name has not been released pending arraignment.
