BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A former substitute teacher is expected to be charged after allegations arose that he solicited a student.

Leslie Eric Miller, 68, was arrested Thursday and is expected to be arraigned Friday on a count of accosting a child for immoral purposes, court records show.

Miller was contracted through a vendor as a substitute teacher at Lakeview Middle School in Battle Creek. In a statement to News 8 shortly after the investigation was launched, the Lakeview School District told News 8 it was informed Oct. 29 of allegations “involving inappropriate communication.”

“Upon learning of these allegations, the individual was immediately removed from the district pending the outcome of an investigation into the matter,” a district spokesperson said in a statement.

In a Thursday release, the Battle Creek Police Department said its investigation determined “inappropriate conduct had occurred between the substitute teacher and student. The conduct was not of a physical nature and, instead, centered around inappropriate communication between the substitute teacher and student.”

Police said they don’t think any other students were involved but said anyone with information can call them at 269.781.0911.

The district added that it was cooperating with BCPD’s inquiry and has launched its own internal investigation “to ensure district policies and protocols were followed.” It declined further comment on the specific circumstances, citing the ongoing investigation.

Broadly, the district said that “(a)ny time allegations of inappropriate communication are made, the district immediately takes steps to address the situation.”

“Every allegation is taken seriously and behavior that does not meet Lakeview School District’s high standards or code of conduct, is addressed through district policies. While contracted individuals are not directly employed by Lakeview School District, they are accountable to the same state standards and high expectations that the district holds for its own employees,” the statement said.

The statement went on to say that the district “is committed to the health and wellbeing of their school community” and that “teachers and staff are dedicated to creating a safe and positive academic environment where all students can thrive and grow.”
