COLDWATER, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities in Coldwater say they are investigating an arson fire that was set overnight in the city’s industrial park.

It happened at a vacant building at 100 Industrial Ave., near Jay Street, according to a Wednesday release from Coldwater Public Safety. The building was previously used as a stockyard.

Police say an officer was patrolling the area and spotted the freshly set fire. The officer informed dispatch and requested the fire department, but the fire spread rapidly and the building was declared a total loss, according to the release.

The fire department said the building was used to store equipment and motor oil.

“The old wooden structure, combined with the flammable liquids, caused the fire to spread quickly,” said Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz in a release.

Police reported “recent instances of vandalism in the area.” If you see any suspicious activity, you’re asked to call 911. If you know anything about the fire, you’re asked to call the fire department at 517.278.4525.
