GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A massive puppet that scaled up the Amway Grand Plaza in downtown Grand Rapids during the kickoff event for ArtPrize has one more West Michigan performance scheduled.

David, a 35-foot, 200-pound puppet from The Underground Circus in Canada, made his United States Debut on Sept. 13 to celebrate the opening of ArtPrize. He climbed the downtown Grand Rapids hotel with the help of five puppeteers.

After the performance, he was brought to 45 Ottawa Ave. NW near Rosa Parks Circle, where visitors could help control the puppet.

The goal was to bring a big spectacle to the art competition.

“We’re really hoping that he brings back that energy that ArtPrize is known for: Doing really big, dramatic spectacles,” ArtPrize Director of Operations and Production Theresa Anderson told News 8 before the big reveal at the opening ceremony. “I’m really hoping that we have a community response that means that people want to come out and see him.”

Tuesday is his last day at 45 Ottawa Ave., but ArtPrize attendees will get one more chance to see him during the Closing Ceremony on Friday. The ceremony is set to take place starting at 6:30 p.m. outside of the Woodbridge N. Ferris Building.

“We have something pretty special planned for that too, that’s a little bit different, that involves some circus act that he’s going to be performing with,” Anderson said. “I highly encourage everyone to come out and see that too.”

The Closing Ceremony will be a block party with food trucks and a cash bar.
