GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Throughout ArtPrize 2024, the News 8 Live Desk will be giving you a closer look at some of the about 900 pieces being displayed throughout the city, hearing from the artists behind them.

Above, Digital Host Phil Pinarski spoke with Bree DuBay about her piece titled “Let Them Eat Cake.” It is currently situated at Gita Pita.

Her mom, Susan DuBay, also has her piece titled “The Art of Pain” at the same location.

Both artworks look to bring awareness about the illnesses the two have suffered from. Susan DuBay created her piece after being diagnosed with loin pain hematuria syndrome and Bree DuBay’s work was made to show her own battle with eating disorders.

Bree Dubay said she hopes her piece serves as a reminder to everyone that how they look shouldn’t be dictated by society but by themselves.

“Our world, and my generation a lot too with social media and stuff, we’re so surrounded by how people look, how we look, how our bodies look, what we’re eating, what’s considered healthy, what’s up to trend with all of those things and I think that mindset is what’s unhealthy about it all,” Bree Dubay said.
