Instilling hope through art, science and community support

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (ABC 4)- The final days of ArtPrize may be upon us, but the ability to create, imagine, self-express and explore the world around us extends beyond the international festival.

The opportunity to innovate, illustrate, share ideas and observe also exists in science.

To explore the intersection of art and science, students at the Van Andel Institute for Education unleashed their creativity, using chalk to draw illustrations and words to communicate positive messages to their peers.

“They have each of their different ways of expressing things, and that’s what art is about, and that’s what science is about. Let’s express our ideas and share them with the world,” said Terra Tarango, director and education officer at the Van Andel Institute for Education.

Several of these illustrations convey messages of hope, and an upcoming event in Caledonia, MI, in which the community is invited to attend, further instills it.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the community can support the mission of raising awareness and funds for treatments and research at the 17th Annual Bee Brave 5K Walk/Run.

The event occurs on Saturday, Oct. 5, and registration is still open.

Proceeds will go towards furthering breast cancer research at Van Andel Institute.
