GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (ABC 4)- Since 2015, the Children’s Healing Center has remained a special place where families with children vulnerable to illness can “connect with others, be active and have fun,” in a safe, welcoming environment.

With two locations in West Michigan and Southeast Michigan, it serves as the nation’s first year-round recreation center for children and young adults (ages 0-26) with weakened immune systems, and is an oasis where they can focus on creating positive memories, rather than their medical diagnoses.

Thanks to community generosity, all Children’s Healing Center programs are free.

“Once a child qualifies with a medical referral, the entire family can participate in programs that really bring them community, friendships, fun and a little bit of hope back into their lives,” said Melissa Block from the Children’s Healing Center.

These programs include age-based or topic-based programs, storytimes, Little Tots University, tween/teen nights, art and cooking programs, family game nights, and adult support groups.

Additionally, the center provides playgroups, special events, camps, open gym sessions and common spaces.

“The Children’s Healing Center offers a caring and nurturing environment where kids can be kids, despite any health challenges they may be experiencing,” said supporter Katie VanderWeide Renker. “To be able to participate in activities that promote social, emotional, and physical healing in a safe space is so important for these children.”

To further protect the health and well-being of its members, the Children’s Healing Center upholds hospital-grade cleanliness with filtered water, air filtration systems, strict cleaning procedures, positive pressurization, health screenings and more.

“The fact that they are so diligent here about monitoring their temperature and parents are really respectful about not bringing sick kids has really allowed him to enjoy this a lot,” said Michael Lynn, a parent and center member, discussing his son’s experience.

“The fact that he’s able to engage with other kids and have a much smaller chance of getting sick is huge,” Lynn added.
