GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (ABC 4)- October is Fire Prevention Month, and local firefighters from the Rockford Fire Department are ensuring kids learn about fire prevention and safety!
Recently, their crew brought their fire trucks and shared fire safety messages with first-grade students at Parkside Elementary School.

“It’s good to get the kids excited,” said Chad Peckham, a firefighter at Rockford Public Safety. “They need to know what to do in case there’s an emergency and the alarms go off. It can be crazy, it can be hectic, and if you don’t have a plan, that’s when bad things can happen. So, we really like to drill into them to know what to do.”
During their visit to the school, students learned what to do in case of an emergency, safe ways to exit their homes, and had the opportunity to tour a fire truck.
“Our students naturally are fearful of the unknown,” said Mindy McGinn, principal at Parkside Elementary. “When we can bring in a safety type situation and help them to see what the firefighter looks like, help them see the truck, to help them know what to expect to experience should they ever have an emergency, they’re less afraid.”
