GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (ABC 4)- Students enrolled in Ottawa Area ISD’s Young Adult Services Program have a wonderful opportunity to gain life skills and achieve maximum independence.
The program, designed for adult students ages 18-26 with disabilities and special needs, remains instrumental in helping them acquire employability, social-emotional, communication and household independence.
In the program, students learn how to cook, clean, do laundry, and enhance their life and fine motor skills, to name a few. They also have the opportunity to assist local organizations and community partners with fun tasks.
“This space was designed with adults in mind,” said John Koerner, director of Youth Adult Services. “We want adults to feel like this is the last step before I’m out doing the rest of my life. It’s really meant to feel and be prepared for adult-sized people with adult needs.”
