GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (ABC 4)- Thursday, Oct. 10, is World Mental Health Day, a global initiative to raise mental health awareness and empower communities and organizations to collaborate in developing initiatives focusing on various aspects of mental health care.
Recently, Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore and Priority Health have teamed up to equip girls with tools to identify and express their feelings.
At Caledonia Elementary, Girl Scouts participated in a “Feelings Wheel” activity, which supplies them with words to discover and pinpoint their emotions.

“Just having more vocabulary to describe those words just helps them to feel more comfortable talking to others about it, and not feeling alone,” Jennifer Doan with Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore said.
By participating in various activities and programs the girls earn mental health awareness patches including, “Knowing My Emotions,” “Finding My Voice,” “Showing Up for Me and You,” and “Resilient. Ready. Stong.”

“We want to be constantly connected to the issues of our community,” said Abbey Sladick from Priority Health. The beautiful thing is, we have organizations like Girl Scouts that are trusted, they’re embedded in the communities, and we come with our resources, and we’re able to partner and really help the girls build resilience.”
