GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (ABC 4)- For kiddos and families looking forward to trick-or-treating this week, the injury prevention team at Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital wants to share a few tips to keep kids safe:
What things should parents consider when choosing a Halloween costume for their kids?
- Be Seen! Flashlights/reflective material
- Be careful with masks.
- Use appropriate length costumes to prevent trips.
- What environmental things should parents be aware of?

- Cross at street corners and crosswalks
- Drivers need to slow down and use headlights.
- Slippery surfaces including wet fallen leaves.
What about candy? Any concerns?
- Age-appropriate candy
- Don’t eat anything that’s been opened.
- Don’t eat anything homemade unless it’s by someone you know
How else can parents keep their kids safe?
In the event someone gets separated, kids should know or have an adult’s phone number somewhere on them
