CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Gerald R. Ford International Airport is considering adding an on-site hotel.
If the project goes through, it would be the airport’s first on-site hotel. The project is still in the theoretical stage, a spokesperson said in an email to News 8.
“The possibility of it happening is years away,” the spokesperson wrote. “It is not near-term, and we don’t have any additional information to share.”
A project to move the airport’s air traffic tower would need to be completed before the hotel can be built, according to Crain’s Grand Rapids Business, which first reported on the potential hotel.
The fast-growing airport is in the middle of a major $600 million expansion project. As part of the project, crews have expanded Concourse A, adding eight new gates and give restaurants.
The airport is building a consolidated car rental facility and a terminal enhancement project, which will relocate ticket counters, and a new parking garage is set to be built.
Ford Airport is also working to add a federal inspection station, which will make way for international direct flights, as the airport will be able to process international passengers and bags.
Other recent new additions at the airport include a Uccello’s location, a Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers spot and an indoor animal relief area.
Ford Airport served a record number of passengers last year. Earlier this year, it said it is on pace to break that record again in 2024.
