GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — You might want to grab your pickleball paddles for a new tournament raising money for Special Olympics Michigan.

It’s being put on by the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and the All In Pickleball Gym. The weekend-long tournament goes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. It then continues Sunday at 8 a.m.

The nine different tournament brackets are full and the gym will be open for anyone to come out and watch and support Special Olympics Michigan. The funds help the athletes compete year-round at no cost.

“I think it’s important just to have an outreach in the community if there’s something that our community needs,” Shelby Humphries, a deputy with the sheriff’s office, said. “I think we should be the ones to be able to step up and make it happen.”

There are raffles, food trucks and more activities at the event. Organizers said it’s a great way to bring the community together for a good cause.

“Just being able to find common ground and support the amazing athletes that the Special Olympics represents, it’s just part of who we are and our values and why we want to keep doing those types of events,” Dan McConnon, the founder of All in Pickleball Gym, said.

While the tournament is raising money for Special Olympics Michigan, one court will be reserved for a world record attempt. A group will be trying to break the Guinness World Record for the longest amount of consecutive play in a pickleball. Starting Saturday they plan to play for 30 hours straight while raising money for Gift of Life Michigan.
