GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Whitehall Vikings have their work cut out for them during this week’s regional title game. They have to deal with Carson Vis.
Vis, the quarterback for Grand Rapids South Christian, is a Western Michigan basketball commit who can jump out of the gym and burn defenses both on the run and through the air.
That doesn’t mean the Sailors think they’re walking into an easy win. They have to deal with Whitehall quarterback Camden Thompson. He’s is a Western Michigan basketball commit who can jump out of the gym and burn defenses both on the run and through the air.
At the AAU boys basketball level, Vis and Thompson are finishing each other’s plays. Both have played for the Grand Rapids Storm basketball team.
“We played on our travel basketball team for the past like three years. So I mean, I’ve gotten to know him pretty well,” Thompson said of Vis.
“We know each other a little bit. He’s cool, we talk,” Vis said of Thompson.
For one last time — at least on the gridiron — these two will be rivals before they become teammates. Both coaches know that if they’re going to win, it will be thanks to their athletic Western Michigan basketball commit.
“He’s the leader of the offense,” South Christian Coach Danny Brown said of Vis. “I think the biggest thing as the games get bigger, the biggest thing he can do is his calming presence. He’s been in a lot of games in his career, whether it’s football or basketball, and I think he adds that level of calmness to our team. That’s as big as any play he’s going to make.”
“I think their length versus how athletic they are, for being as tall as they are, are really the things that jump out and, on film, being able to extend the play. Both of them do a wonderful job with that,” Thompson’s coach Tony Sigmon added.
South Christian (7-4) plays Whitehall (8-3) Friday at 7 p.m.
