GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Democrat Elissa Slotkin will win the election to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate, Decision Desk HQ projects on NewsNation.
“THANK YOU, MICHIGAN!” U.S. Rep. Slotkin wrote in a post on social media. “This would not have happened without the hard work and support of so many: my family, our volunteers, donors, and of course — everyone who voted in this election. I promise I will do everything in my power to be the principled leader you deserve.”
Decision Desk HQ’s projection around 3:10 p.m. was followed within minutes by the same call from The Associated Press. Slotkin’s win came with only about 20,000 more votes than her Republican opponent.
“Over the last 20 months, I’ve been lucky enough to travel across the state and hear directly from Michiganders about the real struggles that they’re facing in their communities, and I want to continue to hear from you,” Slotkin said during a Wednesday afternoon news conference in Detroit shortly before the call. “I pledged throughout this campaign that I wouldn’t just turn up in election season and that commitment remains. I will continue to show up, to listen, to show up again. When you call upon me, I will answer that call and I will act.”
She said that promise was to all people in Michigan, regardless of whether they voted for her.
“I will always hear you out. I will always be upfront with you about where I stand. Because the truth is there are no monopolies on good ideas,” she said. “My job as an elected official is to fight for Michiganders — Republicans, Democrats, independents alike.”
She said she would work to support the growth and stability of the middle class, strengthen the domestic supply chain, combat gun violence and drug overdoses, offer mental health support and defend reproductive rights. She said she was interested in practical, bipartisan solutions but also knew what issues she must “never compromise on.”
“Our first priority is to deliver for our constituents and the people we represent,” Slotkin said.
Slotkin beat Republican Mike Rogers, a former U.S. representative. NBC News reports Rogers called Slotkin Wednesday afternoon to concede the race. In a statement, he congratulated her on her victory.
“I wish her the best as she serves the people of Michigan in the Senate,” his statement read in part.
He went on to thank those who supported his campaign and promised to “continue to serve Michigan now and into the future.”
“I am humbled and honored for the millions of Michiganders who embraced our campaign, shared their thoughts, their concerns, their ideas, and put their faith and trust in me to serve our great state as their U.S. Senator. I’m also proud to have run on the ticket with our President-elect, Donald J. Trump, and I have no doubt that he is going to help move Michigan and America forward,” the statement continued.
Slotkin has represented a swath of Mid-Michigan in the House of Representatives since 2019.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to be the nominee for U.S. Senate in the state of Michigan, the state I love, and I cannot tell you how positively I feel, no matter what happens, about the future of our country because I’ve seen people step up, I’ve seen people operate, I’ve seen them take ahold and just do something with that energy,” Slotkin said Tuesday at her election night watch party at Motor City Casino in Detroit.
The seat Slotkin will fill is being vacated by U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat, who has held it for 24 years.
“(Michigan has) a really long history of being well-represented in the U.S. Senate by leaders who are known for their decency, for their integrity, for their grit. I am very cognizant of the fact that if everything works, on Jan. 3, I will be stepping into the shoes of one really amazing leader, my dear friend and mentor, Sen. Debbie Stabenow. Sen. Stabenow is pure Michigan and she has quite literally dedicated her life to public service and serving at the local, state and federal level,” Slotkin said Wednesday. “I’m enormously grateful for her friendship, her service, her example.”
Stabenow said while leaving her Senate seat is “bittersweet,” she’s excited to pass the torch to Slotkin, who she called “a terrific person.”
““I’m very, very honored to have had the opportunity to serve you in the United States Senate. So I want to first say ‘thank you.’ It’s been my honor to get up every day and suit up and be able to go and fight for you. It is now my honor and excitement to know I am going to be passing the torch to somebody who lives Michigan as much as I do and is going to make sure that we continue the one-two punch for Michigan. Elissa Slotkin is going to be a great United States Senator. There’s no question about it,” Stabenow said at Slotkin’s watch party.
She said she sees a lot of herself in Slotkin.
“Elissa and I share so many common views of how to get things done: Working across the aisle, listening to people, respecting people. We’re in a very divided country right now, and state, and we need to respect each other and listen to each other. I also love she grew up on a farm, and I love she understands manufacturing, passions of mine, as well as healthcare. She’s going to do well and she’s a terrific person,” Stabenow said.
