LANSING, Mich. (WLNS/WOOD) — A crash and fire on I-96 east of Lansing late Saturday night killed four people, including a man from Carson City, and injured 17 others, Michigan State Police say.

The crash happened around 11:40 on I-96 near the M-52 overpass near Webberville when a semi-truck driver was unable to stop his vehicle for upcoming backed-up traffic, hit several vehicles and caught fire, MSP said. Fifteen vehicles were involved in the crash.

According to police, the road had been blocked while a utility crew was stringing new electrical lines but the interstate had just reopened when the crash happened. The truck was driving west in the left lane when it hit several other vehicles.

The names of those killed were not released Sunday afternoon, but MSP said they were a 29-year-old man from Carson City, a 20-year-old woman from Lansing, a 43-year-old woman From Lansing and a 47-year-old man from Lansing. Police said the Lansing victims were related and were all in the same SUV. The Carson City man was in a pickup truck.

Police say 17 people who were injured were taken to hospitals in Lansing for treatment. The driver of the semi, whose age and hometown were not released, was taken to University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

The Northview Band Boosters posted on Facebook that buses bringing students and spectators back from state marching band finals at Ford Field in Detroit were behind the crash and had to be rerouted. There was no indication that any students or spectators were injured and both buses arrived back in West Michigan overnight. One of the band’s trailers did appear to have been involved in the crash but everyone was OK and the trailer was drivable, the boosters said.

Westbound I-96 near Webberville was closed for a time following the crash but Ingham County reports that I-96 and M-52 have been reopened.
