GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — There’s no denying it right now. Following Sunday’s 52-14 lopsided win over Tennessee, the Detroit Lions are hot.

Not only have they won their last five games, but for the fourth time in franchise history they have scored at least 30 points in four straight.

These Lions have dominated teams with a balanced attack. Quarterback Jared Goff has been historic in his own right, playing extremely efficient football. During the Lions’ last four games, Goff has completed at least 80% of his passes and had a passer rating above 140.0 in three of them. He finished with a 129.9 passer rating against the Titans.

David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs have proven themselves as one of the NFL’s best running back duos. Over the last four games, the two have combined for 478 rushing yards, 148 receiving yards and six scores.

That same balanced attack has been key in two of the three previous years where the Lions hit that offensive milestone.

The 1997 Lions had Hall of Famer Barry Sanders in his prime — the same year he cracked the 2,000 rushing yard benchmark and was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year and co-MVP. But during that four-game stretch, quarterback Scott Mitchell also had a strong showing, completing 65% of his passes for 991 yards and six touchdowns.

In 1971, it was quarterback Greg Landry and running back Steve Owens leading the way. During their four-game run, Landry racked up 820 passing yards and eight touchdowns in a run-heavy game. Owens finished with 495 all-purpose yards and six scores.

The 1952 Lions are the one exception. They were one of the franchise’s four NFL championship teams — all titles were won before the Super Bowl era. The 1952 squad was led by legendary quarterback Bobby Layne who racked up 866 passing yards and nine touchdowns to will the Lions to victory in their four-game stretch.

The Lions (6-1) have never scored 30-plus points in five consecutive games, giving the team a chance to make history against NFC North rival Green Bay (6-2) next Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox.
