GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A potential project would turn the former Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in downtown Grand Rapids into a coworking space.
According to plans filed with the city, the proposed project at 2 Fulton St. near Division Avenue would turn the gallery space into a shared office space, a “modern and future-proofed coworking space serving entrepreneurs, teams, and individuals.”
It would also house a nonprofit incubator institution, which would anchor the building, the plans say.
The building would need “significant interior work” due to an awkward layout and high ceilings, the plans say.
The UICA moved out of the building during the pandemic and Ferris State University listed the building for sale. The UICA moved into the Kendall College of Art and Design’s Woodbridge N. Ferris building, on Pearl Street near Division Avenue, before closing for good in 2023.
The UICA was first opened in 1977 by a group of Grand Rapids artists.
A sale of the building, which is listed at $5.4 million, is pending, according to the Pure Real Estate Brokerage’s website.
