GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — A line crew from a West Michigan power company is responding to Florida ahead of a hurricane set to hit Wednesday, the second in two weeks.
Grand Haven Board of Light and Power sent a line crew Monday in response to Florida’s requests for mutual aid in the expected aftermath of Hurricane Milton. Five other Michigan municipal electric line crews are also heading out to help with recovery efforts.
Milton, which as of Tuesday afternoon was upgraded to a Category 5 storm, is expected to hit Florida’s west coast Wednesday. Officials are warning residents not to expect the hurricane will weaken and urged evacuations, the Associated Press reports.
The storm is expected to hit just less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene, which left southeast states with flooding and destruction.
“When an electric system is damaged beyond the capabilities of the local electric utility, a call for assistance from other utilities is requested. … Other utilities not affected by the damage then respond with what they can offer,” GHBLP explained in a news release Tuesday.
