CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The Gerald R. Ford International Airport has again been named a top small airport by USA Today.
Last year, the Kent County airport was named the best small airport by USA Today readers. This year, it landed in the No. 2 spot of the top 10 list, losing out to the Myrtle Beach International Airport in South Carolina.
Twenty finalists were picked by experts, and readers then voted to pick the top 10.
“It is an incredible honor to be recognized as one of the top 10 best small airports in the country by USA TODAY,” Tory Richardson, president and CEO of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority, said in a statement to News 8. “We are grateful to our dedicated team, partners, and the entire community who made this achievement possible. We look forward to continuing our efforts to deliver a world-class experience for all who travel through our airport. Thank you to everyone for your tremendous support!”
USA Today noted the Ford Airport’s amenities, including “a dedicated military welcome center, plane-themed playrooms for younger guests, a self-serve wine wall featuring local wineries, and more.”
A major $600 million expansion project is currently underway at the airport. Crews have expanded Concourse A, adding eight new gates and give restaurants.
The airport is building a consolidated car rental facility and a terminal enhancement project, which will relocate ticket counters. The air traffic control tower is set to be relocated and a new parking garage is set to be built.
Ford Airport is also working to add a federal inspection station, which will make way for international direct flights, as the airport will be able to process international passengers and bags.
Other recent new additions at the airport include a Uccello’s location, a Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers spot and an indoor animal relief area.
